Living with COPD can be challenging, but simple daily techniques can help you manage shortness of breath and conserve your energy.
Master Your Breathing
Two key techniques can make a big difference:
- Pursed-Lip Breathing: Inhale slowly through your nose for two counts. Then, purse your lips as if to whistle and exhale slowly and gently for twice as long (four counts). This helps keep your airways open longer, releasing trapped air.
- Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing: Sit or lie down. Place one hand on your chest, the other on your belly. As you inhale through your nose, feel your belly rise. As you exhale through pursed lips, feel your belly fall. This strengthens your main breathing muscle.
Practice these when you’re calm so they become second nature when you feel breathless.
Pace Yourself
Avoid rushing, which can trigger breathlessness. Plan your day to space out strenuous activities. Break tasks into smaller steps and take rest breaks in between. Sit down whenever possible for tasks like cooking or dressing.
Stay Active Safely
It may seem hard, but regular activity is crucial. It improves how your body uses oxygen and strengthens your breathing muscles. Start slowly with short walks. Ask your doctor about Pulmonary Rehabilitation, a supervised program that teaches you to exercise safely and effectively.
By incorporating these strategies, you can take control of your breathing and improve your daily life.
