Conserve Your Energy with COPD

Feeling constantly tired is common with COPD. Learning to conserve your energy, or “pace yourself,” can help you get through the day without as much breathlessness and fatigue.

Plan and Prioritize

  • Plan Your Day: Each evening, think about the next day. Schedule your most demanding tasks for when you have the most energy, usually in the late morning.
  • Simplify Tasks: Break down big chores, like cleaning, into smaller steps. Do one step at a time and rest in between.

Use Labor-Saving Tools

  • Sit Down: Use a shower chair and a handheld showerhead for bathing. Sit down while you cook, dress, or do other daily tasks.
  • Use a Cart: A small, wheeled cart can help you move groceries or laundry without carrying heavy items.
  • Wear Easy Clothes: Choose clothing that is easy to put on, like items with zippers instead of pullovers, and slip-on shoes.

Move Smartly
Move slowly and deliberately. Exhale during the hardest part of a movement, like when you stand up, bend over, or lift something. This makes the effort feel easier.
