A COPD flare-up (or exacerbation) is when your symptoms suddenly get worse. Knowing how to prevent and manage them is key to staying out of the hospital.
Prevention is the Best Medicine
- Avoid Germs: Wash your hands frequently and get recommended vaccines (flu, pneumonia, COVID-19).
- Stick to Your Plan: Take your controller medications every day as prescribed.
- Avoid Triggers: Stay away from smoke, strong fumes, and air pollution.
Recognize the Early Signs
Act quickly if you notice any of these changes:
- Increased shortness of breath.
- A change in your mucus (more of it, thicker, or a change in color).
- Needing your rescue inhaler more often.
Have an Action Plan
Work with your doctor to create a written COPD Action Plan. This plan will tell you exactly what to do—such as which medications to increase—when your symptoms change. Knowing what to do can help you manage a flare-up early at home. If symptoms are severe, such as difficulty talking or lips turning blue, seek emergency help immediately.
